Life Transitions

LIFE TRANSITIONS

Change is an inevitable part of life. Although everyone goes through change, that doesn’t mean that it’s always comfortable or easy to move forward with. We may even recognize that some life transitions are beneficial and positive, but they can still be difficult to deal with emotionally. Regardless of whether the life transitions faced are welcomed or unwelcomed, anticipated or unexpected, or sudden or gradual – facing this change means to confront our present way of living in order to make room for the new development in our lives.

Change can come with resistance, including experiencing feelings of fear, uncertainty, anxiety and stress. It is natural to resist a change that conflicts or goes against our routines and what we feel is familiar. Examples of life transitions can include: moving homes, retirement, job loss or career changes, adjustment to college or a new workplace, the arrival of a new baby, changes in familial or social relationships.

When life changes feel too overwhelming to handle alone and the stress is more than you can bear, consider speaking to a therapist. Our team can support you in exploring coping strategies and address the feelings that come with the change in order to better manage the impact the change has on your daily life. If you anticipate dealing with change or recognizes that you don’t cope well with change, speaking to a therapist before any significant changes in life occurs can help. In this way, you can prepare for changes and be equipped with the tools to better able to face them in the future.
