DR. CAROLINE MAYKUT, PH.D., C. PSYCH.

Dr. Caroline Maykut earned her Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where her research focused on assessment and conceptualizations of sexual desire. Following completion of her degree, Dr. Maykut completed a fellowship in Rural Health Psychology with Norton Sound Health Corporation in Nome, Alaska, and worked as a practicing psychologist in Alaska. She then completed a 2-year fellowship at the Institute for Sexual and Gender Health (ISGH) at the University of Minnesota Medical School. At the ISGH, Dr. Maykut worked in Relationship and Sex Therapy, Compulsive Sexual Behavior, and Transgender Health programs. She has extensive training in sex therapy, and has been trained in Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C), and Emotion-Focused Therapy for Resolving Emotional Injuries (EFT-C-EI).


Dr. Maykut's therapeutic approach is warm, engaged, collaborative, and evidence-based. She draws on a variety of modalities according to the needs and goals of her clients.  Her goal is to help clients develop insight and awareness into their current concerns and work actively towards meaningful change. She believes in accessing and building on clients' strengths, and integrating vulnerabilities into a healthy identity that is grounded in self-esteem. 


Dr. Maykut works with a wide variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, and phase of life adjustments. She has a special interest in working with individuals, couples, and other relationship systems on issues related to sexual health and function, intimacy, compulsive/problematic sexual behavior, sexual trauma recovery, and gender identity exploration and/or gender transition support. She is affirming and knowledgeable of LGBTQ+, poly/ENM, and kink identities. 


Dr. Maykut is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. She is a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR), and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). She continues to contribute to research and scholarship in the areas of sexuality and gender.
