Fears and Phobias

FEARS AND PHOBIAS

Fear helps protect us from danger and unsafe situations. But when our fear is irrational, uncontrollable, overwhelming, and prevents us from doing things we want or need to do, it becomes a phobia. Phobias cause intense fear and anxiety. Some people may even experience panic attacks (i.e. heart racing, difficulty breathing, sweating, chest pain, dizziness). We can be scared of an object (e.g. needles, cars), a person (e.g. clowns), an animal (e.g. spiders), an activity (e.g. going to the dentist) or a situation (e.g. flying, driving, public speaking). Psychotherapy can help. Our therapists are trained to support clients in facing and overcoming their fears in a clinically supervised and gradual way, using empirically supported modalities, such as Exposure Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Relaxation therapy.
