About

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based therapy and has had a significant impact on the field of psychotherapy based on extensive research on client in-session processes that facilitate positive outcomes. EFT is also transdiagnostic psychotherapeutic approach as its interventions and principles can be adapted across different client populations and a variety of client issues. It has evolved into a comprehensive theory of functioning and clinical practice and focuses on working with a client's core underlying, painful emotions to transform emotional pain and suffering and promote enduring change.

This training is for licensed mental health professionals (example: psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, social workers). Students with therapy training and pre-licensed therapists are welcome. No prior knowledge of Emotion Focused Therapy is required. If you are unsure if you are eligible to take the training, please contact us directly at training@cpeh.ca to inquire about your credentials and eligibility to take the trainings.

About the Certification Levels

  • EFT Level 1

    Next Dates: October 6, 13, 20, & 27, 2026

This intensive four-day Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) Certification Training teaches the foundational knowledge and practical skills to work effectively with emotion in psychotherapy. Participants will learn to identify different types of emotional processes and understand their role in psychological distress, and use evidence-based, marker-guided interventions to facilitate meaningful and lasting change.

EFT is a well-established, evidence-based approach that views emotional change as the key to lasting therapeutic change. By helping clients transform maladaptive emotional patterns through the activation of adaptive emotions within a strong empathic therapeutic relationship, EFT promotes emotional resilience, a stronger sense of self, and healthier relationships.

This experiential training combines lectures, video demonstrations, case discussions, and extensive supervised practice in small breakout groups, allowing participants to develop confidence in applying EFT interventions from the very beginning.

Through this intensive training you will learn to:

    • Identify different types of emotions and emotional processes and how to intervene: adaptive, maladaptive, instrumental, secondary.
    • Provide emotion psychoeducation to clients and give rationales about the therapy change process.
    • Recognize in-session markers and their corresponding interventions.
    • Facilitate the Principles of Emotion Change (utilize, regulate and transform emotion).
    • Use the different types of empathic responses and understand their function.
    • Engage in collaborative case formulation in EFT and following the client’s core pain.
    • Recognize Problematic Reactions and use the Intervention of Systematic Evocative Unfolding
    • Use the Focusing intervention to deepen emotional experience.
    • Work with Self-Criticism using the 2-Chair Intervention for Self-Criticism.
    • Work with Unfinished Business using the Empty Chair Intervention.
    • Work with avoidance and blocking using the 2 Chair Enactment for Self-Interruption.
    • Learn how to recognize a vulnerability marker.

Who should attend: Licensed psychologists, registered psychotherapists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, counsellors, and other regulated mental health professionals. Graduate students are also welcome.

Please note that full attendance and active participation throughout all four days are required to receive a certificate of completion.
