CARMINE MALFITANO, PH.D., M.S.W., R.S.W.

(He/Him)

Carmine Malfitano is a registered social worker and psychotherapist providing therapy to both individuals and couples. He received his Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Toronto and completed his doctoral studies focused on individuals and couples facing a diagnosis of life-threatening cancer.

Carmine is trained in several psychotherapeutic modalities including Emotion-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and mindfulness. He employs an integrative approach that is neuroscience-informed, CBT- and/or EFT-based, and draws from several other evidence-based modalities to provide therapy that is uniquely tailored to the specific needs of his clients. His clients experience him as an intuitive and caring therapist.

Carmine works with his clients with thoughtfulness and respect to co-create a safe, non-judgmental space to explore important issues, identify strengths, and foster meaningful changes. He finds great beauty in the therapeutic process and in empowering clients to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

Carmine strives to provide excellent evidence-based therapy to individuals who are struggling with: relationship issues, depression, low-self-esteem, self-criticism, unfinished business, and various types of anxiety.  He helps couples with relational difficulties and works from an Emotion-Focused Therapy approach to improve communication, deepen emotional connection, and help couples work through relationship difficulties and conflicts resolution.

Carmine has been an activist, advocate, outreach worker, and counsellor in the LGBTQ community for over a decade. He has experience working with individuals struggling with issues related to the coming out journey, body image and disordered eating, gender identity or sexual orientation, or a new diagnosis of HIV. He has also worked with couples navigating the complexity of same sex relationships.

Carmine also works as a clinician specialist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where he provides psychotherapy to individuals and couples facing advanced cancer. As a Research Associate for the Global Institute of Psychosocial, Palliative, and End-of-Life Care at the Princess Margaret and the University of Toronto, he is involved in national and international research studies exploring a variety of important cancer survivorship and existential issues.
