DR. FERN KAGAN, PH.D., C.PSYCH.

Dr. Fern Kagan has been working as registered psychologist treating individuals and couples since 2011. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from York University. She completed an internship at Northern Illinois University (2011-2012) where she worked full time as a therapist in the university counselling center where she co-created a workshop on anger management, and co-led a series of relationship groups.

Dr. Kagan has done extensive research on the factors that contribute to relationship satisfaction, including completing a dissertation on how people in long marriages account for remaining married. She utilizes her training and experience to help couples regain empathy for each other, heal emotional injuries and strengthen their connection.

Dr. Kagan works with clients who have relationship issues with family members, friends, co-workers, intimate partners and perhaps mostly importantly, their relationship with themselves. In addition, she works with people struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, self-criticism, perfectionism, depression, and creative blocks, and helps people overcome the obstacles preventing them from living their life to the fullest.

Dr. Kagan works from a humanistic, experiential framework and strives to attune her approach to the unique needs of her client in an empathic non-judgemental environment. She has trained extensively in Emotion-focused Therapy (EFT) for individuals and couples, and she also supervises therapists seeking to increase their efficacy in EFT. Dr. Kagan incorporates evidence based therapy modalities to focus on building clients’ strengths and facilitating self-compassion.

Dr. Kagan continues to refine her clinical and research skills through reading and writing, attending clinical workshops and participating in conferences.

Dr. Kagan is a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, the Ontario Psychological Association, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the International Society for Emotion-Focused Therapy.
