Dr. Chafe completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology at York University. He completed his clinical residency at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships where he worked with diverse groups of individuals and couples experiencing a range of difficulties. 


Dr. Chafe has a warm interpersonal style and is empathetic, nonjudgmental, and compassionate in his work. Davey believes providing a safe, collaborative, and welcoming environment allows individuals to work through their difficulties and emotions in a safe and healthy way.


Dr. Chafe has worked with individuals experiencing a variety of difficulties including post-traumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, mood disorders (e.g., depression), and anxiety (e.g., worry, social anxiety, panic), along with other common difficulties such as self-criticism, emotion regulation difficulties, relationship issues, and work and school related stress. He has also worked with neurodivergent populations (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder) providing coaching and counselling to university students with ASD. To help navigate these difficulties, Davey takes an integrative, client centred approach to treatment drawing from evidence-based therapies such as Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Skills, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Informed therapies, and self-compassion.


In terms of couples and sex therapy,  Dr. Chafe works with couples to address a wide range of relationship issues, including improving their capacities for emotional, physical and sexual intimacy, repairing ruptures to their bond in the aftermath of infidelities and betrayals, and managing conflicts over finances, parenting and extended family members (i.e., dealing with difficult in-laws). Dr. Chafe supports couples who are in high distress and face issues such as Complex PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and other intricate difficulties.


Dr. Chafe has completed clinical training in a variety of settings, including the York University Psychology Clinic, Brampton Civic Hospital in their Adult Day Treatment Program for depression and anxiety, Bear Psychology – Trauma Institute doing individual and group therapy, and provided DBT-informed couples therapy as part of a clinical research trial. During his residency at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships, he worked from integrative and psychodynamic/psychoanalytic perspectives. Throughout these settings, he has worked with individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds that present with a variety of psychological difficulties. In addition, he actively attends workshops to further his clinical training.


Dr. Chafe's early research involved studying psychotherapy process (i.e., the moment-to-moment mechanisms that contribute to change), and his graduate research focused on self-compassion, self-criticism, online interventions, and therapist development.
