DR. JOYCE ZHU, PH.D., C.PSYCH.

(SUPERVISED PRACTICE)

(She/Her)

Dr. Joyce Zhu completed her PhD in Clinical and Counseling Psychology
at the University of Toronto, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

Dr. Zhu has experience treating adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety (e.g., generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, agoraphobia, health anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder), depression and other mood disorders
(e.g., bipolar disorder),
pain conditions (acute and chronic pain), as well as trauma, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. She also supports individuals managing productivity, stress, and burnout in high pressure environments and has a special interest in treating individuals with diverse and intersecting identities.

Her clinical approach is integrative and aims to help individuals navigate acceptance and change with a focus on emotional processing. She flexibly draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) within a relational
psychodynamic framework. She is passionate about helping individuals pursue fulfilling and purposeful lives by broadening present-moment awareness, transforming and processing emotional experiences, and connecting with values. She approaches therapy with compassionate and thoughtful attunement to her clients and their experience,  while working together to cultivate self-reflection and growth. She aims to
provide clients with skills, resources, and insight to enhance meaning, alleviate suffering, and build upon existing strengths within a therapeutic space that is safe, empathic, collaborative, and authentic.

Dr. Zhu completed placements across a wide variety of settings in Ontario and Boston. She trained at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School in the Behavioral Health Partial program and Mentalization-Based Therapy Clinic, as well as college counseling
centers at Suffolk University and the University of Toronto OISE Psychology Training Clinic. She also trained in health psychology settings at Toronto General Hospital in the Transitional Pain Clinic and GoodHope Ehlers-Danlos Clinic, where she developed a strong appreciation for treatments that support the integration of the mind and body.  In addition to her clinical work,  she is also pursuing a postdoctoral research fellowship examining the moment-to-moment change dynamics of emotion underlying individual differences in personality.
