DR. VIRGINIA BOQUIREN, PH.D., C.PSYCH.

Dr. Virginia Boquiren is a Clinical and Health Psychologist, registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. She completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Rosalind Franklin University, Illinois, USA. She did her predoctoral internship at Vancouver Coastal Health, in the Health Psychology specialty track.


Dr. Boquiren works with clients who are experiencing a variety of psychological disorders, including anxiety and depression. In addition, she helps individuals who are coping with various psychosocial stressors, including low self-esteem and confidence, body image issues, self-criticism, relationship issues, work stress, both single incident and complex trauma, grief/loss of loved ones, as well as challenges living with chronic illness (e.g., cancer) and managing pain. Continuing to learn and refine her clinical skills is a mainstay of her clinical career, which she does through participation in conferences and workshops. She has also done training in the areas of sexual health and Emotion-focused therapy for individuals and couples (EFT).


Dr. Boquiren aspires to provide evidence-based treatment,  integrating cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), emotion focused therapy (EFT), dialectical-behaviour therapy (DBT), and mindfulness approaches. In addition, she provides psychoeducation and supportive group psychotherapy. She strives to provide a safe, non-judgmental, supportive environment, and works collaboratively with clients to help them achieve their goals.


Dr. Boquiren is also passionate about mentoring and providing supervision and training to students and psychologists in supervised practice. For her students’ training, she puts an emphasis on having solid assessment knowledge and skills (e.g., knowledge of DSM-5 criteria and using semi-structured interviews). Dr. Boquiren helps students work from an evidence-based, integrative style of treatment that utilizes a variety of different therapy modalities that is tailored to the client’s unique needs. She views the students’ supervised practice training year as an important opportunity to build and further refine clinical skills and gain valuable experience that would solidify a foundation of success for autonomous practice.


Dr. Boquiren is a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, Canadian Psychological Association, and International Society for Emotion-Focused Therapy.
