DR. AMMAAR KIDWAI, PH.D., C.PSYCH.

SUPERVISOR IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

(He/Him)

Dr. Ammaar Kidwai is a registered psychologist. He completed his PhD in the Clinical Psychology Program at Toronto Metropolitan University.

Ammaar specializes in assessing and treating a broad range of concerns among adults and couples. These include low mood, depression, grief, anxiety (e.g., social anxiety, panic attacks, generalized anxiety, health anxiety), perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder including complex trauma (e.g., interpersonal, racial, sexual), relationship difficulties, general life stressors, gender and sexual identity (e.g., homophobia, transphobia), emotional regulation difficulties, suicidality, and psychosis. Moreover, he is qualified to conduct assessments for gender dysphoria and surgical readiness for transgender and other gender diverse individuals considering gender affirming medical interventions (e.g., hormone therapy, surgical interventions). Lastly, Ammaar works with couples from diverse backgrounds (e.g., same-sex, heterosexual, racialized, interracial), addressing a wide range of relationship difficulties including but not limited to improved emotional awareness and communication skills, infidelities and betrayals, managing conflict (e.g., familial, financial), and intersectional-related concerns (e.g., discrimination, familial/societal acceptance, outness).

As therapy often involves expressing the most vulnerable version of ourselves, Ammaar is committed to providing a warm and safe environment to better facilitate this process. Ammaar understands the importance of forming a strong therapeutic bond and honours this relationship through ongoing collaboration with clients, ensuring they have autonomy over their own clinical care. Informed by an intersectional lens (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, immigrant status, health status), Ammaar adopts an integrative approach to psychological treatment, drawing from evidence-based interventions including Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy (DBT).

Ammaar holds a specific interest in providing clinical supervision to early career professionals and students, drawing exclusively from evidenced-based treatments (e.g., EFT, CBT, DBT skills) and assessment tools (e.g., SCID, SCID-PD, DART, MINI). Ammaar offers a warm and empathetic supervisory style, routinely integrating comprehensive clinical guidance and feedback with an emphasis on developing and refining clinical skills among supervisees. Aligning with a scaffolding approach, Ammaar aims to foster a sense of independence and growth in supervisees throughout their clinical training year(s). Ammaar is a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, Canadian Psychological Association, and International Society for Emotion-Focused Therapy.
